The house in Glenwood

Professor Kunene's home in Durban is now a museum. Behind it sits one of Africa's great private literary archives.

The museum

His honours, his library, his rooms

The house holds the honours conferred on him across four continents, from the UNESCO laureateship to the City of Los Angeles Resolution, together with his library and personal papers.

The room Where East Meets Africa records his long exchange with Japan, where he lectured in 1970 and 1983 and where his epic was published in 1979.

The archive

More than ten thousand original items

The family archive holds more than ten thousand original manuscript items, many written during his diplomatic years in London. It has remained whole in the family's care for sixty years, with a clean and continuous chain of custody.

The Foundation is developing the archive for preservation, digitisation and scholarly access, working with the University of KwaZulu-Natal and partners who share that aim.
